2 NYPD sergeants shot, one fatally, in the Bronx
NEW YORK – One New York City Police sergeant has been killed and another injured in a gun battle with a home invasion suspect, reports CBS New York.
Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the sergeant’s death Friday. He says the other officer was shot in the leg and is undergoing treatment.
The sergeant has been identified as Paul Tuozzolo, a 19-year veteran of the NYPD.
According to NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill, Manuel Rosales fired at the officers after a brief pursuit. In the gunfight, the officers shot and killed Rosales.
The official says a woman called 911 after Rosales broke into her home, violating an order of protection. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss an ongoing case and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
O’Neill said Rosales is the estranged husband of a woman with an apartment on Beach Ave.
A lawyer who previously represented Rosales says his client wasn’t violent.
Spokesman Stephen Davis says the suspect’s car was pulled over near a ballfield by police who had received a description of someone who had just committed a home invasion. He says the suspect fired on the sergeants who were responding.
News helicopter footage of the scene shows a red SUV mounted on a sidewalk pinned between a flatbed truck and a police vehicle.
Sources told CBS New York that the deceased sergeant had been with the NYPD since 1997 and was 41 years old, and that the other sergeant, 30, has been with the NYPD since 2007.
