2 killed in Okla. Interstate shooting spree

CUSTER COUNTY, Okla. - Two people are dead after a man drove through three counties on Interstate 40 firing randomly from his pickup truck, authorities said.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), police in western Oklahoma began receiving multiple 911 calls late Wednesday night, reporting the driver of a vehicle committing acts of road rage. Callers also reported the driver was shooting at cars.

Just after midnight, a man driving with his wife along Interstate 40 westbound near Hydro was hit by gunfire, according to the OSBI. Jeffrey Kent Powell, 45, of Arapaho, died at the scene, reports CBS Affiliate KWTV.

A short time later, Weatherford police on normal patrol found a vehicle on Airport Road just off I-40. Inside the vehicle was a woman, 63-year-old Billie Jean West, of Lone Wolf, who had been shot. She was pronounced dead at a Weatherford hospital.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers caught up with the pickup truck described by multiple 911 callers. A short pursuit ensued, with the suspect traveling into Washita County, then back into Custer County.

Then the suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Jeremy Doss Hardy, of Pasadena, Texas, pulled to the shoulder and surrendered.

Hardy was arrested on a complaint of DUI. He was taken to the Custer County jail.

KWTV anchor Justin Dougherty tweeted photos of bullet holes from the shooting spree.
