14 killed in suicide bomb attack on Shiite procession in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD -- A Pakistani police official says a suicide bomber has targeted a Shiite procession in the southern Pakistan city of Jacobabad, killing 14 and wounding 30.

Yar Mohammad Lasharai says the suicide attacker hit the procession of mourners as it reached the end of its route Friday evening.

Lasharai says many of the wounded are in critical condition and the death toll could rise.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but suspicion fell on Sunni extremists who have been blamed for previous attacks.

The latest attack came as minority Shiite Muslims marked Ashoura, a 10-day ritual when they commemorate the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Shiite Muslims hold public rallies despite threats from Sunni extremists who consider them to be heretics.
