World War II Veteran Finally Receives Legion Of Merit Award

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A member of the "Greatest Generation" finally has the award he earned -- 70 years ago.

World War II veteran Arnold Hjermstad, 96, of Cannon Falls finally got his Legion of Merit award Saturday. Congressman John Kline presented the medal at the Twin Rivers Senior Center. Family, friends, and fellow veterans were on hand for the ceremony.

"Nobody should have to wait 70 years to get the medals that you have earned," Rep. Kline said.

Hjermstad earned it while he was serving in North Africa and Europe, but because of clerical errors in the system, he never got to hold it -- until now.

After decades of searching, his three sons were able to work with Congressman Kline to secure the award.
