Woman Being Sentenced For Leaving Children To Die In Cold
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A South Dakota woman who authorities said left her two young daughters to die in North Dakota is being sentenced in federal court.
Rosebud Sioux member Michelle Wounded Face pleaded guilty in June to child abuse and neglect charges. She could get up to 10 years in prison but also could be sentenced under federal guidelines to time served since her arrest in January.
Federal Judge Daniel Hovland said during an earlier hearing that he'd like to see Wounded Face get help rather than a lengthy prison term.
Authorities say Wounded Face abandoned her 2- and 4-year-old daughters in a car in a rural area of the Fort Berthold Reservation. They survived.
Wounded Face later said she had been under the influence of drugs and didn't remember leaving her children.
