Minn. Teen Killed In Eau Claire Rollover, 2 Other Teens Injured
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A teenage boy from Plymouth was killed and two other teens were injured Friday evening in a rollover crash near Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says the accident happened at about 7:18 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 94.
The teens were in a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, headed to a cabin near Eau Claire for the holiday weekend, when the vehicle veered onto the shoulder. The driver over-corrected, and the car rolled over, eventually ending up in the median.
Kevin William Messer, 16, was killed. Fifteen-year-old Leo John Schreiner, also from Plymouth, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Mayo Clinic. Sixteen-year-old Hanna Fatima Sedqi, from Robbinsdale, also suffered non-life threatening injuries, and was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital.
All three passengers were wearing their seat belts, and investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
A candlelit vigil was held for Messer at a ballpark at the hometown ballpark, where he often played for Armstrong High School. Messer's older brother spoke to the hundreds of friends and family that attended the service.
Schreiner's mother said her son underwent surgery for broken bones, and is recovering at Gillette Children's Hospital. She said he was devastated he couldn't attend the memorial service honoring his friend.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating.
