Winter Lays Total Claim On Easter Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- You thought winter was through with Minnesota already? Well, bless your heart.

With a system of heavy, wet snow will hit much of northern Minnesota Friday with cold temperatures and bitter wind blasting across most of the state this weekend, according to WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer.

A first wave of snow deposited 4 to 6 inches in the north, from Fargo to Duluth. Another system overnight will add even more.

That heavier line of snow moves in at around 10 p.m. and will continue into Saturday, bringing as much as 5 to 10 inches in spots, with places like Brainerd seeing the potential for the most snow.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for an area stretching from Fargo through Bemidji, Brainerd, Duluth and Hayward, Wisconsin. St. Cloud, Elk River, and Rice Lake are some of the areas under a winter storm watch, where anywhere from 2 to 4 inches are expected. A blizzard warning is in effect for the Fargo area and parts of northwestern Minnesota.

The Twin Cities metro area shouldn't see much in the way of anything accumulating, but precipitation will fall in the overnight hours. The system should clear out by lunchtime Saturday.

Gusts of wind in the Twin Cities could reach 30 miles per hour Saturday, making our high of 30 degrees feel more like 10.

Easter Sunday will see low teens or single digits in the morning, close to record low temperatures for this time of year.
