Winona Company Cited In Dock Worker's Death
WINONA, Minn. (AP) — A federal workplace safety agency is citing a Winona company in the death of a dock worker last summer.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited CD Corporation for one serious safety violation. The agency is proposing penalties of $7,000.
Twenty-four-year-old Brent Allen Burt of Winona died Aug. 27 after falling more than 18 feet onto the metal floor of an empty barge on the Mississippi River.
Federal inspectors found that Burt's employer, CD Corporation, failed to provide fall protection.
Investigators determined that Burt fell while closing sections of a rolling cover on the barge. Investigators found workers were not provided safety nets or a personal fall arrest system when they closed the covers.
An official of CD Corporation did not immediately return a request for comment Monday.
