Windy, Dry Conditions Challenge Firefighters For 2nd Day
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- High winds and dry conditions made for a challenging past couple days for Minnesota firefighters.
The Isanti Fire District says crews battled blazes in Bradford and Athens townships in Isanti County Thursday.
A boat that was sitting directly behind a home caught fire in Bradford Township, which then spread to the home.
Firefighters were able to stop the blaze before it could cause major damage to the residence.
Crews next moved to Athens Township to stop a cornfield fire before it spread to a nearby farm.
Several grass fires flared up Thursday across the Twin Cities metro area, including a fire that threatened a mobile home community along Edgewood Drive and County Road H in Mounds View.
Record heat and high winds fueled several fires Wednesday, including one that destroyed four homes in Otsego, killing two dogs.
Two homes were also destroyed by fire Wednesday in St. Paul, ignited by a fallen powerline.
Gov. Mark Dayton called in the National Guard Thursday to help in the fire fight, and a good portion of the state was under a red flag warning.
