Wetterling Remains Found 20 Miles From Abduction Site
STEARNS COUNTY, Minn. (WCCO) -- The remains of Jacob Wetterling were found in a rural area of Stearns County -- a farm field 20 miles from where Jacob was abducted and just a mile and half from where Danny Heinrich lived in 1989.
Sickening to think that for nearly 27 years, folks have been driving past this picturesque cattle pasture, never thinking the trail would end here.
On Wednesday, Danny Heinrich led FBI agents to the spot where he buried Jacob Wetterling's body and clothing. For the past three days, authorities have dug with a backhoe and shovels along a treeline just a few hundred yard's from a farmhouse in a lush green pasture, filled with grazing cattle.
Those who saw the work going on thought nothing of it.
"It's unbelievable it could be 250 to 300 yards away and you have no idea," one neighbor said.
Neighbors are shocked by the evil that was perpetrated in such a peaceful rural setting.
"Shocking, it's really shocking that something like this could happen so close to you, and you don't realize what's going on," the neighbor said.
The folks who live nearby don't want to create a macabre spectacle of this grave site, so WCCO will not give out the location.
