Minnesota Weather: April Winter Storm Bringing Big Snow In NW, Icy Roads To Much Of State

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) -- A powerful spring storm is generating winter-like weather conditions in northwestern Minnesota and the Dakotas, with record snowfall and heavy winds.

Four-to-8-inches of wet, heavy snow is expected late Thursday and through the overnight Friday in western and northwestern Minnesota, according to WCCO Meteorologist Chris Shaffer.

Cities like Alexandria, St. Cloud and Paynesville will likely get freezing rain and drizzle throughout the overnight, which will cause concerns on the road.

The Twin Cities will mostly see rain throughout this event, but there is a chance for a taste of freezing precipitation early Friday morning.

Friday will feel uncomfortable, with the combination of high winds and temperatures in the low 30s.

Western Minnesotan cities like Willmar, Marshall, Detroit Lakes, Alexandria will also deal with freezing rain early Saturday morning, which could also lead to issues like frozen power lines.

The winds will decrease Saturday, while the sunshine will increase.

If you can make through Friday night and Saturday, you'll be in the clear. Temperatures will get back to above average by Sunday, and much of Minnesota will reach into the 60s, and some near the 70s, by Tuesday.
