WCCO Viewers' Choice For The Fair's Best Cool Treat

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. (WCCO) --Even when it's not particularly warm at the fairgrounds, cold treats are always a hot seller.

So we set up a ballot box in front of our building to find the best cool treat at the State Fair.

And your votes sent me in search of a malt.

You might see malts elsewhere on the fairgrounds, but if you want the best, you've gotta go to the source -- the Dairy Building.

The malts don't come straight from the teat, but the malt mix does flow from something that looks like a giant udder.

"Inside there are 300 gallon plastic bags of malt mix or ice cream mix," said Sherry in the Dairy Building. "We sold about 117,000 malts during last year's fair, which tells you that on a really busy day, we'll sell 12,000 malts."

Chocolate is the best seller, with strawberry a close second.

To keep up with the demand, they've got about 100 well-trained teenagers.

You can get malts for $6 at the Dairy Goodness Bar inside the Dairy Building.

They're open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day.
