Vikings Cruises Plans Landing In Red Wing

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - The city of Red Wing is preparing to cash in.

When Viking International Cruise Line makes its debut in the U.S., the port authority of Red Wing already had plans in place to spruce up its riverfront.

"We had been planning this renaissance project for several years," said Randy Olson, the port authority's executive director.

Viking Cruises is willing to spend $1 billion to launch Mississippi river cruises from New Orleans to Minnesota.

Viking plans to create a fleet of about six ships over a three-year period.

The city of Stillwater also wants Viking to consider stopping along the banks of the St. Croix.
