1 Killed In Fight On University Of Minnesota Campus
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minneapolis police are continuing to investigate a deadly fight that began at a popular bar near the University of Minnesota campus.
Police were called to the scene at University Avenue and Oak Street, across the street from TCF Bank Stadium just after 11 p.m. Sunday. Minneapolis police Monday night are stressing that the 20-year-old U of M student who called 911 and was briefly arrested was fully cooperative, and that nearby surveillance cameras support his account.
Multiple squad cars responded to the incident that began at Sally's, a popular restaurant and bar on Washington Avenue near the U of M campus. Minneapolis police say the dispute between two young adult men began at the popular gathering spot just after 11 p.m., and that the two individuals continued the argument two blocks away to Oak and University, directly across from TCF Bank Stadium. Minneapolis police spokesperson John Elder says no weapon was involved in the fatal incident, but declined to say what exactly contributed to the death.
"Parts of the investigation will include whether alcohol played a part in this and maybe there was a past relationship, if there was any between the two individuals. We are really keeping our eyes open and looking at all aspects of this incident," Elder said.
Elder stressed the fatal fight was captured by multiple surveillance cameras in the busy area. So far, the video supports the account of the U of M student who called 911, stayed at the scene until police arrived and was briefly arrested, then released after the other young adult involved in the fight died.
"I can say the small amount of video we have seen does not contradict the information that was provided to us by the individual taken into custody," Elder said.
The victim was identified by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner as 27-year-old Derrick Lawrence Geshick Jr. of Roseville. He died of blunt force injuries, and his manner of death has been ruled a homicide.
