'U' Rape Case Now A 'Student Crisis Intervention'
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- University of Minnesota officials say a case originally reported to police as a sexual assault in a dorm room is now being classified as a student crisis intervention.
Officials sent out a campus alert Tuesday after the alleged assault at Sanford Hall early Sunday morning. A student reported that two strangers pulled her into her dorm room and raped her at knifepoint.
Investigators said Wednesday night the the victim actually knew the men, and there was no threat to public safety.
U officials said in a statement released Thursday that police are no longer investigating the case as an armed sexual assault.
"At this time, the University's primary concern is to support the student who reported the incident and to protect her right to privacy," officials said.
The UMPD and The Aurora Center -- which helps serve the victims and survivors of sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking -- are helping to provide support to the victim.
