U Of M Medical Students To Take Part In Nationwide 'Die-In'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Students from the University of Minnesota Medical School's chapters of Physicians for Human Rights and Student National Medical Association participated in a "die-in" on Wednesday afternoon.

The "die-in" is part of nationwide protests against the lack of indictments for police killings in Ferguson, Mo. and New York.

Students from more than 70 medical schools across the country, including New York, St. Louis, Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the Twin Cities, are planning to participate.

U of M students staged the "die-in" while dressed in their white coats. A recent press release said the white coats were a symbol of their privilege to serve as healers and advocates for their patients.

"The responsibilities that come with the that trust binds us to act in their interest both inside and outside the clinics and hospitals where we work," the press release stated.

Protesters say they want to show the medical student community views racial violence as a public health crisis.

The "die-in" took place Wednesday, Dec. 10 in the U of M's Academic Health Center on the Twin Cities campus.
