U Of M Board Of Regents Approves Athletic Director Coyle

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The University of Minnesota's Board of Regents unanimously approved Mark Coyle as the Gopher athletic director on Friday.

"While there have been some well-publicized challenges recently associated with Gopher Athletics, the Board has full confidence in Mark's ability to stabilize the department and provide strategic leadership," said Regents Chair Dean Johnson in a press release.

Just last week, the U faced another of the challenges Johnson referred to, as basketball player Reggie Lynch was arrested on allegations of sexual assault. Lynch was later released and charges were deferred.

Coyle previously served as the associate athletic director for external relations at the U from 2001-05. He is expected to return to Minnesota around Memorial Day. His contract begins June 1.
