Twin Cities Engineer Says Comedy Show Helped Boost Interest In Her Nonprofit

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – It wasn't the intent of the comedy bit, but now a national television show is boosting interest in an organization that provides financial help to women who want to become engineers.

John Oliver is host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight." Recently he criticized the Miss America pageant for making the claim that it gave out millions of dollars in scholarships.

Instead, he told viewers to give to more legitimate organizations, like the Society of Women engineers.

Elizabeth Bierman is an engineer in the Twin Cities.

She is also president of the group.

"And we provide more than $7,000 in scholarships each year to help women pursue a career in engineering," Bierman said.

She says they saw a 9,000 percent increase in visits to their Web page
