Trump: 'I Promise You I Will Not Let You Down'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It has been nearly 24 hours since Donald Trump was elected to be the next president of the United States.

"I look very much forward to being your President, for two, three, four or even eight years," Trump said.

He gave his victory speech early Wednesday morning. From reality TV, all the way to the White House.

One of the first items on President-elect Trump's agenda was to thank supporters, and call for cooperation.

"To all the Republicans, and Democrats and Independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people," Trump said.

Hours later, Hillary Clinton summed up her disappointment in one short sentence.

"This is painful and it will be for a long time," Clinton said.

"Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead," Clinton said.

But anti-Trump protesters across the country still had their minds made up. Hundreds marched to Trump Tower in Chicago Wednesday night, hours after students and teachers walked out of classrooms at some California high schools.

Despite the angst, President Barack Obama said he will meet with Trump at the White House on Thursday to talk about his transition as America's 45th president.

"It is no secret that the President-elect and I have some pretty significant differences," President Obama said. "We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country."

Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence met with their transition team Wednesday to talk about cabinet appointments.

Trump will take the oath of office ten weeks from Friday.
