Total Wine Denied Liquor License In Minnetonka
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials in Minnetonka say that a motion Monday night to approve a liquor license for a Total Wine store failed to pass a city council vote.
The vote was 4-3, but a supermajority of five votes is needed to grant a liquor license, a city spokesperson said.
Concerns of traffic in the area were cited during the meeting. The Total Wine sought to go next to the Whole Foods off of Plymouth Road in the Ridgedale shopping area.
Last year, Target was denied a license to sell liquor at its SuperTarget on Highway 101, the Star Tribune reports.
Currently, Minnetonka has 11 liquor stores. The city has an ordinance saying that 12 stand-alone liquor stores are sufficient to serve the city.
Total Wine, a big-box-style liquor retailer, started moving into the Midwest market in 2014.
Currently, the business has stores in Bloomington, Burnsville, Maple Grove, Woodbury, and Chanhassen.
