Top 10 Greatest Songs From 'Jock Jams'
Whoa. This list brought back some musical memories.
Those born before 1990 *should* remember the iconic "ESPN presents Jock Jams" pump-up-the-crowd-to-the-max compilation albums released by Tommy Boy Records -- or at least some of the jams included.
Although pretty short-lived (volumes were released from 1995 through 1999, with "The All-Star Jock Jams" released in 2001), Jock Jams certainly made an impression that lives on to this day. Many, many of these bomb tracks are still used in stadiums across the country.
It wasn't easy to choose, but the tracks below are certain to get the crowd bumpin'. So, "ya'll ready for this?" "Let me clear my throat" (and stop using song references) and present some of the best Jock Jams of all-time!
No. 1: "Get Ready For This" - 2 Unlimited
Of course this song is first. It's a great introduction song to any party/sporting event. I mean, that synth can get anybody going, right?
.
No. 2: "Whoomp! (There It Is)" - Tag Team
It's just a great song for chanting four words – with one of them making really no sense. But it doesn't need to.
.
No. 3: "Tootsee Roll" - 69 Boyz
It's 1994 and everything is perfect. Everybody loves synchronized crowd dancing.
.
No. 4: "1-2-3-4 (Sumpin' New)" - Coolio
One of Coolio's greatest!
.
No. 5: "Boom Boom Boom" - The Outhere Brothers
The key to a hit Jock Jams song: repetition of nonsensical words!
.
No. 6: "Let Me Clear My Throat" - DJ Kool
DJ Kool has made many a crowd jump, jump, jump.
.
No. 7: "Push It" - Salt-N-Pepa
Many of these Jock Jams are quite ... sexual, but the crowd doesn't care!
.
No. 8: "Mo Money Mo Problems" – Notorious B.I.G.
I dare you to listen to the first 5 seconds of this song and not feel an overwhelming sense of joy.
.
No. 9: "Miami" – Will Smith
If you're a child of the '90s, I don't even need to tell you that Will Smith was Big Willie Style supreme. And 'Miami' was his smoothest disco-rip ever.
.
No. 10: "Pump Up the Jam" - Technotronic
This tune makes the list not only because of its extremely appropriate name and bumpin' bass, but c'mon ... that music video is just amazing.
