Thousands In Twin Cities Without Power After Storms
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The latest round of strong storms with frequent lightning and heavy rain has knocked out power to thousands across the Twin Cities.
Officials with Xcel Energy said power was out for about 106,000 customers in the Twin Cities and southeastern Minnesota after high winds and heavy rain moved across the state Saturday. Winds knocked down trees on power lines in the south and southwest Twin Cities metro. Crews have been out all day Sunday to restore power, and as of 1 p.m., 8,000 customers were still without power. Officials said power has been restored to about 92 percent of customers who lost it in the weekend storms.
Xcel Energy officials said they called in more than 500 linemen, contractors and support staff to help restore power to those affected as quickly as possible. Additional crews were called in from its Upper Midwest service territory as well as neighboring utility companies and contractors. Crews worked through the night to restore power.
Officials said if you see a downed power line, contact Xcel Energy and stay away from the line.
