The Secret For The St. Thomas Women's Soccer Team? Their Rapping Goalie
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- When Eminem said you only get one shot, he wasn't talking about soccer. But he could've been.
Opportunities to score on St. Thomas don't come very often. And Tarynn Theilig almost never lets it go... in.
"It does have a lot of pride for me when we're doing really well," said the Tommies' senior goalkeeper.
In 14 games this year, Theilig has 11 shutouts. She's given up a grand total of three goals all season.
Her secret weapon?
"The words just kind of flow to me," Theilig said. "So I can like, usually throw down a beat, as they call it."
That's right. Call her, "The Rapping Goalie." It's something she started last season.
"I had a dream that I rapped to the team," Theilig explained. "And I woke up and I was like, huh, that was kind of cool. And so I wrote it down, and I go, 'can I, like, rap for you guys?' And they're like, 'sure.' And they're like, 'that was so cool!' And so it kind of became a tradition."
Each game gets its own original composition.
"If I have time, I'll do it during breakfast," Theilig said. "Or, sometimes you'll see me like 10 minutes before our talk, and I'll be sitting out here with a pencil and paper and I'll be, like, thinking of words to rhyme with."
It's strictly a pregame tradition, so you won't see her breaking it down in the middle of a matchup.
"I was thinking about it," Theilig said. "I was like, maybe if we're like down a goal I could be like, 'yo girls, we need to step up,' and like, go into it. But, not yet."
Granted, they aren't down a goal very often.
