'Thank You' To The Stranger Who Mailed My Lost Letter

By Edgar Linares, WCCO Radio

I almost never write thank you letters, especially to people I don't know. The reason I'm writing this letter is because last week I was pretty upset.

I was in a rush to go to work and I was running late. I grabbed a letter I was going to mail and stuffed it in my coat. The letter, already addressed and stamped, had a $55 gift card to Target for a friend in Texas. She had won the gift card through a contest I had put together.

I quickly ran to catch my bus. Almost every day I take the #5 Metro Transit bus to work. Once I got to my stop at WCCO Radio, I reached into my pocket and felt nothing, the letter was gone.

I had dropped it on the bus and the bus was already four blocks down the road. I thought to myself, "Goodbye $55 bucks!"

I texted my wife and told her what had happened, and she replied with a supportive "good one!"

Still upset, I took my frustrations to Facebook. I asked my friends if they thought someone would mail the letter or not? Some said "no," but most said "yes."

The next weekend I kind of forgot about the letter. It was too painful to think I had lost $55. Then on Tuesday, my friend from Texas sends me a photo with the caption "It made it."

That put a smile on my face, not only because my friend got the gift card but because some stranger on that bus saw my letter, put it in their pocket or purse and then they took on the responsibility to mail it.

They could have just as easily opened the letter and gone on a $55 shopping spree, but they didn't, and for that I thank them.

As one of my Facebook friends put it, " ... faith in humanity is restored."

Thank you.
