Target Plans More 'Express' Stores, Including 1 In Highland Park
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) -- Target announced they're planning a number of new locations for their new micro-sized TargetExpress stores, including one set for the Highland Park neighborhood in St. Paul.
Target field-tested the smaller format store in Dinkytown, opening up a 20,000-square-foot store last July. The stores are smaller and carry merchandise tailored to cities where they are located.
"Smaller formats like TargetExpress and CityTarget offer customized assortments and services to meet the needs of guests who are increasingly moving into urban centers," Target executive vice president and chief stores officer Tina Tyler said.
Target didn't say exactly where they expect the Highland Park TargetExpress to open, or when other than that it was set for 2015.
The retailer also plans to open seven other TargetExpress stores around the country this year, including locations in Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. Additionally, the retailer has plans in 2015 to open six regular-format stores, and a CityTarget in Boston.
Target said late last year that it would close 11 stores by Feb. 1, the end of its fiscal year, in smaller towns like Carrolton, Texas; Bay City, Illinois and Lithonia, Georgia. During 2014 the company opened 16 stores and closed 12. It currently has 1,790 stores in the U.S.
The company is shutting all of its 133 Canadian locations after a disastrous entry into the new market just two years ago, saying last month that it did not foresee a profit there until at least 2021. It is taking a related $5.4 billion charge in the fourth quarter.
Shares of Target Corp. were unchanged at $73.61 in afternoon trading Monday.
