Target Asks Kids How To Make Schools Healthier

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Target is launching a new campaign to make the school year a little better.

Target has asked students to come up with ideas on how to be more active or eat healthier at school.

"Kids are at the heart of our entire back-to-school campaign," said Laysha Ward, Target's executive vice president and chief corporate social responsibility officer.

Target teamed up with the nonprofit DonorsChoose.org, giving K-12 students the opportunity to have their ideas become a reality through Target's donations. The campaign officially launched Aug. 1.

"The ideas have ranged from a vegetable garden in the classroom to an opportunities to get pedometers for every student in a classroom," Ward said.

To get an idea funded by Target, students have to ask a teacher to submit the idea. There are three main criteria: It has to be kid-inspired, cost less than $1,000 and be focused on health and wellness in the classroom

"All ideas are welcomed, encouraged" Ward said. "And we're really, really excited that we'll be able to donate up to $5 million to fund kid-inspired ideas through this campaign."

Ward says $1.5 million has already been donated. Students can submit their ideas online until Oct. 1, or until the full $5 million has been donated.
