State Teaching Board Sued Over Licensing Practices
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Four teachers are suing Minnesota's teaching board for licensing practices they say are unfair.
The lawsuit filed Thursday in Ramsey County says the Board of Teaching has denied licenses to qualified would-be teachers for years. It says the board's standards are unclear and it doesn't adequately recognize teachers' work experience in other states.
Erin Doan, the board's executive director, disputes the claims. She says the board has made several changes in recent years to ease the licensing process for out-of-state teachers. Doan says the board wants licensing standards to be fair no matter where a teacher is from.
Minnesota House Republicans fast-tracked an education bill this year that included measures to make a teaching license easier to obtain. The move hasn't gained as much traction in the DFL-led Senate.
