State Patrol: 1 Dead, 3 Hurt In Dakota County Rollover Crash
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – One person was killed and three others were hurt in a rollover crash involving four teenagers Wednesday night in the south Twin Cities metro, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Authorities responded to the crash at about 9:42 p.m. on Highway 52 at 180th Street in Dakota County. When officers arrived, a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee was heading northbound on Highway 52 when it lost control, went into the median and rolled over, coming to rest in the southbound lanes.
A 17-year-old boy who was a passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified by authorities as Ty G. Alyea of Burnsville. An 18-year-old man from Burnsville was taken to Regions Hospital with serious injuries, and two 17-year-old boys, including the driver, suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash. According to the State Patrol, Alyea and one other passenger were not wearing a seat belt, while the driver and one other passenger were belted.
The State Patrol said both Alyea and the 18-year-old seriously hurt were ejected from the vehicle.
Burnsville High School Principal, Dave Helke, released a statement Thursday expressing sadness over the car accident involving Alyea, a student at the high school.
Helke said that administrators and other support staff would be available Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the high school to talk to any staff and students affected by the loss.
What led up to the crash is under investigation. The Minnesota State Patrol is being assisted by the Dakota County Sheriff's office with the investigation.
