St. Peter's AME Church Marks 135th Anniversary In South Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- St. Peter's AME Church marked a milestone Sunday.

It was 135 years ago when the church was founded in south Minneapolis. At the time, there was only one other AME Church serving the city on the east side of the Mississippi. It was felt that a new church on the West side of the river would serve the city well.

St. Peter's set up shop on the corner of Nicollet and Washington. Today, the church sits at 42nd Street and 4th Avenue.

"It's our third location -- we've been destroyed twice by fire," Senior Pastor Rev. Nazim Fakir said. "This particular facility broke ground in 1952, and we moved in here in 1953 and we've been in this community ever since."

Special services were performed Sunday with a speech from a Senior Bishop. After services, St.Peter's unveiled a wall commemorating all of its pastors.
