St. Paul To Vote On Streetcar Study
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- There's a big transit vote Wednesday for the St. Paul City Council.
They must decide whether to move ahead with a study that would make way for streetcars to return to downtown St. Paul.
The project would cost $250 million.
On Tuesday, the Southwest Light Rail project looked to have jumped over its biggest hurdles on Tuesday after months of disagreement.
The city of Minneapolis reached a deal with the Metropolitan Council over the $1.65-billion project.
The controversial route would go through the Kenilworth area, which has some people worried about how the line would change the neighborhood.
The deal will now include only one tunnel and add a passenger station at 21st Street.
The city council still must approve the deal, and they're expected to take a final vote after a public hearing to be held on Aug.19.
The Southwest Corridor line would run from downtown Minneapolis through St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Eden Prairie.
Hopkins and Minnetonka have already approved the route. St. Louis Park and Eden Prairie will vote by July 14.
