U Of M Warns Of Bike Thefts As Spring Approaches

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Authorities are looking for a suspect after a series of bike thefts on the University of Minnesota campus.

The University of Minnesota Police Department says a man was spotted Sunday on video surveillance stealing a bike near Middlebrook Hall. Authorities say the man had cutters to remove the lock from a bike inside his coat and was able to complete the theft in a matter of 15 seconds.

The suspect is seen on surveillance footage riding away with the bike. Authorities say they were not able to get to the suspect before he fled the area, and the bike has not yet been reported stolen. The bike appears to be black and gray in color.

University of Minnesota police say on the same day, they took one of three suspects into custody who attempted to steal one of their bait bikes.

Bike owners around campus should be aware of the possibility for thefts as the weather warms up and spring approaches.
