Sons of Donovan, Powers To Speak At St. Louis Park Synagogue
ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (AP) — The sons of the American lawyer and the captured U-2 spy plane pilot featured in Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies" will appear at a Minnesota synagogue this week.
John Donovan and Gary Powers Jr. will speak Thursday in St. Louis Park as part of Beth El Synagogue's "Heroes Among Us" series.
Donovan's father, New York lawyer James Donovan, was recruited by the CIA to negotiate the release of Powers' father, Francis Gary Powers, after his spy plane was shot down over Soviet airspace in 1960.
The Cold War story is told in the movie "Bridge of Spies," with Tom Hanks playing James Donovan, and in the book "Strangers on a Bridge."
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the synagogue's Minnesota National Guard unit support initiative.
