Sheriff: 'Great Tips' Led To Arrest In Andover ATM Robbery
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials in Andover say tips from the public led to an arrest Tuesday in the case where a 61-year-old man was sprayed with mace during a weekend ATM robbery.
Anoka County Sheriff James Stuart said authorities arrested 24-year-old Kai Joseph Stellmach, of Andover, in connection to the Saturday robbery at the U.S. Bank on Bunker Lane Boulevard.
"Once again, our partnership with the community has paid off," Stuart said. "I greatly appreciate the support of our citizens who provided great tips in order that we could make a timely arrest of this suspect and make our community a safer place again."
The robbery happened Saturday afternoon in the bank's entrance, where an ATM is located. The robber demanded cash from the 61-year-old man.
Officials say the man tried to fight off the robber, but was sprayed with Mace, or a similar chemical irritant.
On Monday, authorities asked the public's help in finding the suspect, and released surveillance photos to the media.
Less than a day later, Stellmach was arrested. Officials say he has yet to be formally charged.
