Sheriff: Chase Ends With Suspect Hitting Stearns County Squad Car

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 31-year-old man is in custody after a police chase Sunday night in Holdingford ended with the suspect vehicle hitting a squad car, according to the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say the incident happened at about 6:01 p.m. as a sheriff's deputy initiated a traffic stop for a violation on County Road 17 in Holdingford. During the stop, the deputy learned the driver, identified as Aaron Swanson of Pierz, had felony warrants for controlled substance violations.

The officer also believed Swanson was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the traffic stop. The deputy asked Swanson to perform a field sobriety test, and that's when Swanson put his vehicle in drive and fled.

A pursuit that lasted a few miles ended when Swanson struck a sheriff's car. Nobody was hurt during the chase, and Swanson was arrested and booked into the Stearns County Jail. The incident remains under investigation.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office was assisted in the pursuit by the Minnesota State Patrol.
