Fallen St. Paul Firefighter Memorialized On Wall Of Honor
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A fallen St. Paul firefighter is being memorialized this weekend on a national monument.
Shane Clifton, 38, collapsed at his fire station one year ago. He died at the hospital of a heart attack.
Saturday, his name was one of 123 added to the International Association of Fallen FireFighters Memorial Wall of Honor in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
More than a dozen St. Paul firefighters made the trip, along with Clifton's family.
His 9-year-old daughter received a memorial flag at the ceremony.
Dennis Hall is the secretary of the union representing St. Paul firefighters. He called this a moving weekend for everyone there.
"Thousands of firefighters come out to stand behind the families here and say, 'This is our firefighter, but it was their family member,'" Hall said. "Everything out here revolves around the family and it's just an amazing event."
Hall says since Clifton's heart attack, younger firefighters are more willing to see their doctors sooner.
The city of St. Paul is also working on a health and wellness program for its firefighters.
Clifton will also be memorialized at the Minnesota Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service at the Minnesota State Capitol grounds next weekend on Sept. 25.
