Shakopee Woman Gives Birth At Victoria Fire Department
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's the sort of thing you'd see in the movies: a race to the hospital with mom in labor. But in the case of a Shakopee couple, they never made it to the hospital.
Newborn Nora Campion has been keeping mom and dad on their toes ever since she decided to come almost two weeks early. Rhonda and Dustin were rushing to the hospital Wednesday morning, when they realized they weren't going to make it.
"We decided to call 911 at 8:57, and it said Victoria Fire Department is up on our left in a mile so it was only two minutes," new dad Dustin Campion said. "I turned in there, called dispatched, got everybody out and they were there within one minute."
A few minutes later, the fire truck was out, and laboring mom was in.
"We basically made a makeshift delivery room right on the floor of the bay," Victoria Fire Department Chief Jason Hukreid said.
Just a few minutes after that, Nora was born.
"She pushed for maybe a minute, minute and a half. They baby was out like that," Dustin said.
"Well, my birth plan was an epidural, and that did not happen," new mom Rhonda Campion said.
Nearly 25 volunteer members of the Victoria Fire Department rushed to the station after receiving notice of an "imminent birth."
"Every situation is different. Everyone one is different. You can't train for everything. You just have to go with it," Rick Leuthner of the Victoria Fire Department said
In the case of this emergency, they needed blankets and a little bravery.
"They made this happen," Rhonda said. "Without the Victoria firefighters, we would have been delivering on the side of Highway 5."
All of the fire fighters who helped will receive what's called a "stork pin." It's the recognition they receive for safely delivering a baby.
