'U' Rocked By 2nd Violent Death In 2 Days

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minneapolis police are investigating two deadly incidents in two nights near popular University of Minnesota night spots.

The two cases are not connected, but the fact that they are back to back, and their proximity to the U of M, are raising concerns.

Police responded to a chaotic scene at Seven Corners after multiple shots were fired Tuesday at about 1 a.m. A man who police have not identified was hit, and later died at Hennepin County Medical Center.

"Many people were in the area, so we're asking for anyone with any information to give us a call," Sgt Darcy Horn said.

Sources say investigators are looking at whether the incident began at a music show at the tiny Ruby Lounge, which sits in between Bullwinkle's Saloon and an Jewel of India restaurant.

The Ruby Lounge Facebook Site said a Minneapolis rap group was playing last night, and that the facility is available for rental -- but not anymore. A yellow sign dated Tuesday says the lounge is closed for violating city regulations and for being an unlicensed rental hall.

The fatal shooting happened 24 hours after a fight near TCF Bank Stadium left 27-year-old Derrick Geschick dead of what the autopsy report calls blunt force injuries. The fight began nearby at Sally's, a popular bar for U of M staff and students.

A 20-year-old U of M student was briefly arrested, but then let go. Police say multiple surveillance cameras back his account, and that he is fully cooperating.

The two incidents so close to campus have left students and staff shaken.

"It is pretty scary because there are a lot of young students on campus who might not realize some of the real-world dangers that are out there," said U of M staffer Sophia Herrera.

WCCO-TV did reach out to a phone number associated with Ruby Lounge, and were unable to get through.

The University of Minnesota tells us that even though these deaths did not occur directly on campus, they have 55 sworn offices and 140 part-time security monitors patrolling 24/7.
