Man shot dead by security guard following attempted stabbing in Brooklyn Park

Man dies after being shot by security officer in Brooklyn Park

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. -- Police say a security guard in Brooklyn Park shot a man who was trying to stab a woman Monday night. The man later died of his injuries.

Brooklyn Park police were called to a shooting on the 5800 block of 73rd Avenue North around 11:40 p.m.

When they arrived, officers learned that a licensed, on-duty security officer witnessed a man attempting to stab a woman with a knife. He told police he had heard the woman screaming for help.

The security officer warned the man to drop the knife, but he didn't comply. The security officer shot the man.

The man who was shot was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as 62-year-old Spencer Carpenter.

Police say that they have determined that the man and woman were involved in a domestic relationship. The security guard is cooperating with the investigation.
