Republican, Democratic Minnesota Candidates Hit The Road Saturday To Campaign

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- With just a little more than three weeks from Election Day, both major parties in Minnesota are using the weekend to push people to the polls.

Saturday started early for Minnesota Democrats who hosted a rally in Lakeville. Sen. Tina Smith, who is up for re-election this November, teamed up with members of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to address the challenges teachers and families are facing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We know that the federal government needs to step up and do what it has promised to do, to fully fund education including IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and special education," Smith said.

Gobv. Tim Walz joined the rally encouraging Minnesotans to go with a Biden-Harris ticket in the race for the White House.

As the sun set, about an hour north of the Twin Cities, Republicans teamed up with farmers to hold a Trump rally in Rush City.

"I believe the 11th hour and 59th minute ... we can still garner votes," Rep. Pete Stauber, who is also up for re-election, said.

On Saturday night, he encouraged his constituents in the 8th congressional district to vote for him. Stauber's been hitting the campaign trail aggressively in the last week, despite recently flying on Air Force One with President Trump the day before he tested positive for COVID-19.

"Even though I didn't need to test for COVID I did. I'm negative," said Stauber.

Stauber said he doesn't want to slow campaigning down, so he's taking precautions with voters so he can still meet with them.

"We're following CDC recommendations and social distancing, washing our hands, making sure that we meet people in a safe and responsible way just like I have this entire campaign," said Stauber.

Also there to push the Trump-Pence ticket was South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and former Vikings player Jack Brewer.
