Report: Plaintiffs In Wis. Gay Marriage Case Request $1.2M
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The plaintiffs in the lawsuit that challenged Wisconsin's ban on same-sex marriage are requesting attorney fees in the amount of $1.2 million, according to a new report by the National Law Journal.
The report details a number of cases where state attorneys defended their respective state's gay marriage bans, including a number of states where fees have already been awarded.
Between Idaho, Kentucky, Missouri, Oregon and Virginia, more than $800,000 worth of lawyer fees have either been awarded or agreed to. Idaho's $410,663 total marks the largest sum awarded thus far, as mentioned in the report.
"The fee awards, agreements and requests to date offer an early snapshot of what these landmark civil rights cases could cost taxpayers," reports the journal.
Lawyers representing Wisconsin in the case of Wolf vs. Walker have until late January to file a response, according to the report.
