Investigation Underway After Man Shot Dead On Red Wing Sidewalk

RED WING. Minn. (WCCO) -- Serious crime isn't something residents of Red Wing lose much sleep over. The last murder in the southeastern Minnesota city was nearly a decade ago.

That all changed at 12:06 a.m. Tuesday when a man was found dead on a sidewalk on the city's east side. He had suffered a gunshot wound.

The victim was 27-year-old D'Angelo Masterjohn, who friends say was attempting a new start in life.

Masterjohn had spent time in prison for aiding a killer in the 2012 murder of a St. Paul woman.

Friend Jason Lucktt says Masterjohn had put his gang ties behind him and was making strides and staying positive.

"He was trying to get a job and provide for his kids and stuff," Lucktt said. "He didn't want to get in any more trouble."

Police say they caught a break a short time after the killing when a traffic stop yielded a suspect connection.

"All indications are that the individual may have known the suspect and we do have a person of interest identified," said Red Wing Police Chief Roger Pohlman.

Police have not released the name of the person of interest, but they did focus a search warrant on a home just a block from where the shooting occurred.

The investigation remains on-going.

Meanwhile, Masterjohn's family and friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for his funeral expenses.
