Man Charged With Bus Assault In Minneapolis; Told Victim To 'Speak English'
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 56-year-old man is in jail, accused of attacking a man on a Metro Transit bus in Minneapolis for not speaking English.
The Hennepin County Attorney's office says Cornell White allegedly stood up on a bus Saturday near the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Lake Street East, told a Somali man to "speak English" and began punching him in the head and body.
White, who investigators say is homeless, is also accused of yelling racist and homophobic slurs during the attack.
Officers found 2.5 grams of what was later found to be methamphetamine in White's possession when he was being booked.
He faces one count of fourth-degree assault motivated by bias, and one count of fifth-degree drug possession. His bail was set at $5,000.
