Protestors Shut Down City Council Meeting In Falcon Heights

MINNEAPOLS (WCCO) -- Two months after the police shooting of Philando Castile, protesters frustrated with police relations shut down a city meeting in Falcon Heights.

The city council last night was discussing options for a task force to advise the city on police procedures, training and strategy.

But many people attending that meeting were upset that the council was not giving people a chance to talk. It led to this abrupt ending to the meeting.

The official meeting ended, but the discussion was far from over. After the mayor and council left, a heated dialogue continued between people in the room, about the task force, Castile's shooting and issues of race and police.

Many protesters said a task force is not needed, and what they want is for the city to end its contract with the St. Anthony Police Department.

St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez shot Castile during a traffic stop on July 6. Castile's girlfriend showed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook live.

She says Castile was reaching for his identification, not a gun.

Yanez remains on leave as the shooting remains under investigation.

The ACLU filed a lawsuit recently demanding the release of squad car video from the shooting.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has not released the squad car video saying it's part of the ongoing investigation.
