Protesters March Against 'Racist' Chiefs Name
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A loud protest outside TCF Bank Stadium on Sunday was aimed at the Vikings' opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs.
For decades, local activists have been leading the charge against sports mascots with names like the "Chiefs."
Some in Kansas City say the name honors native people. Members of the National Coalition Against Racism in Sports and Media say the Chiefs name and logo are racist and offensive.
"The best way to fight racism is with solidarity. There's no honor in racism," Henry Boucha, a former professional hockey player, said.
Thousands of people rallied last year when the Washington Redskins played in Minnesota.
Over the past few decades, many high schools and colleges have dropped mascots with Native American names. But pro teams have been more resistant to the pressure.
