Plymouth Store Sells The Most Winning Lotto Tickets In MN

PLYMOUTH, Minn. (WCCO) – Wednesday night's Powerball jackpot, estimated at $500 million, would be the fifth-largest in lottery history.

Minnesota hasn't had a big Powerball winner since August of 2013, when Paul White of Ham Lake picked up his share of a $448 million jackpot.

No matter where you buy your ticket, the odds of winning the jackpot are just one in 175 million, but when it comes to winning prizes of $1,000 or more, one store has sold more winning tickets than any other in Minnesota. It's the Cub Foods store on Vicksburg Lane in Plymouth.

The latest figures from the Minnesota State Lottery show the store selling 27 tickets worth at least $1,000.

By comparison, the location with the highest volume of sales, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, had sold 12 winning tickets in the same period.

The Plymouth Cub has so many winners, in part because it's so busy. Just this week, it's taken in more than $6,000 in Powerball sales.

Assistant Store Director Gene Spurlock said he's had to shift resources.

"We usually just have one register open (for lottery sales)," he said, "but we've had to have two consistently the last few days because we've had so much traffic going through."

But not everyone who buys tickets at the store comes away a winner.

"No I haven't won anything," Mary Crawford of Plymouth said. "Somebody else is always getting my ticket, I guess."

Lynne Wicklund of Plymouth decided it was worth a few bucks to take a chance at winning $500 million.

"I would faint and then try to figure out what to do with it," she said.

The winning numbers for the latest drawing will be announced Wednesday night.

If you win and take the lump sum, the grand prize is about $337 million after taxes.
