Shoppers Head To Stores For Post-Holiday Sales, Returns

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Holiday shoppers are not done yet.

The day after Christmas is traditionally one of the most popular days to make gift returns.

The National Retail Federation reports nearly a quarter of stores change their return policies around the holidays.

Many stores are actually shortening the deadlines for full-price refunds and exchanges.

In addition to making returns, many shoppers are hunting for new sales.

Chelsea Austin of Bloomington spent the day shopping with her children at Mall of America.

"We actually got some gift cards from Christmas so we are using those up, getting some books," Austin said.

For Austin, gift cards are a way to avoid long return lines.

"I think returns the day after Christmas with small kids is out of the question -- for me at least," Austin joked.

The National Retail Federation found nearly half of shoppers said they are taking advantage of in-store after-Christmas sales.

The biggest group expected to show up is millennials -- eight in 10 said they would hit the stores Dec. 26.

A third of shoppers surveyed told the NRF they have no interest in another round of hustle and bustle.

The National Retail Federation found many stores will also now ask for your ID when you return an item in an effort to curb shoplifting, so be sure to bring your ID to the store, especially if you do not have a receipt.
