Police Shoot, Kill Driver Near Small Central Minnesota Town

BOWLUS, Minn. (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating after police in Morrison County shot and killed a driver.

It happened just before 6 p.m. Thursday near the town of Bowlus in central Minnesota.

"And this blue car comes down the road. And I never saw it before. And it comes closer and I realize the whole bumper was hanging off, like the whole back end," said Molly Sobania.

For her, a quiet, country evening took a quick turn. After the blue car passed by her house, law enforcement closed in.

"Cops and ambulances and all sorts of things and flashing lights and loud noises," Sobania said.

According to the BCA, the West Central Drug Task Force was attempting to stop the vehicle. During the stop, a Minnesota State trooper and an Ottertail County deputy fired their guns, fatally shooting a white man in the car.

Another person in the vehicle was also injured. Investigators say they recovered a handgun at the scene.

The state trooper involved was wearing a body camera that recorded portions of the incident.

"Sleepy, little town, so this is big news for us here," said Jordie Stay, of Bowlus.

As they wait to learn more details, people living in and around Bowlus are thankful no one else was hurt.

"Then the rest of the town, we have about 300 people. We all were kind of texting each other and calling each other and the whole town was a buzz," Sobania said.

The BCA says the investigation is on-going.
