Body Found In River Believed To Be Missing Wis. Student
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The search for a missing college student in western Wisconsin appears to be over.
Police in River Falls, Wisconsin, said Monday that they found a body believed to be 20-year-old Robert Sontag. The body was discovered in the Kinnickinnic River near a dam.
Sontag was last seen early Friday morning on Main Street near the University of Wisconsin-River Falls campus. Police say he and a friend were walking home from a bar when they got separated.
Police started searching for Sontag when he didn't show up for class on Friday or for work over the weekend.
The university releases a statement Monday evening, confirming Sontag's death.
"It is with true sadness that I contact you today to inform you of the death of a member of our Falcon family. Many of you will have seen the news earlier today regarding the unknown whereabouts of Robert (Bobby) Sontag, who was a junior, majoring in Dairy Science. The River Falls authorities have recently communicated the confirmed death of Mr. Sontag. He was 20 years old and from Shafer, MN," the statement from Chancellor Dean Van Galen said.
Investigators are looking into what happened.
Alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
