Police: 1 Dead In Officer-Involved Shooting In St. Paul's Midway Neighborhood

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The St. Paul Police Department said a man died in an officer-involved shooting near the intersection of Thomas Avenue West and North Griggs Street on Sunday night.

Sources tell WCCO a car hit an officer's vehicle while on patrol. The man reportedly got out of the car with a knife, would not put the knife down, and was shot and killed.

The shooting occurred around 5:50 p.m. and the officer was not injured, police said.

"Tonight is a sad and difficult night for our city," Police Chief Todd Axtell said in a Facebook post. "Everyone at your police department is deeply saddened by what happened."

In a statement, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter called the shooting a tragedy that touches the entire community.

"My prayers tonight are with the family of the deceased, with the officer involved, and with all who are struggling in the face of this tragedy," he said.
