Police Investigating Suspicious Death In Albert Lea
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Investigators are trying to identify human remains found off the shoulder of Interstate 90 in southern Minnesota.
A landowner in Freeborn County called 911 Monday to report the discovery. The remains were found near a fence along the south side of I-90 near Highway 13.
The investigation is centered near a SuperAmerica gas station at 23087 Highway 13 in Albert Lea.
The proximity of the gas station to the area where the remains were found is one of the reasons authorities say this is a suspicious death. Anyone in good shape could have walked from the SuperAmerica to the area.
Authorities discovered what they believe to be male remains from an adult based on the clothing they found. They think the remains have been there anywhere from one to two years.
"I was informed that we found a ring amongst the remains," Freeborn County Sheriff Kurt Freitag said. "I haven't seen the ring to determine if it's just a simple wedding band or if it might be a ring that has identifying characteristics that a family member would recognize."
The remains are being taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's office to identify a cause of death.
There are no missing persons cases in Freeborn County, so authorities are taking this opportunity to encourage families with missing loved ones to contact authorities with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and give samples of their DNA, which could lead to a possible match in the future.
